About the program

Australian Postgraduate Research Intern (APR.Intern) is a national program that drives industry-university collaboration through short-term PhD student placements. It is delivered by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute at the University of Melbourne.

The program connects businesses, of all sizes, with Australia’s brightest research students across all disciplines.

Over three to five months, students apply their research skills to an identified business challenge while host businesses gain a competitive advantage by tapping into high-end expertise.

APR.Intern operates nationally and is the only national program of its kind, with direct access to all of Australia’s leading universities. APR.Intern has 10+ years of experience facilitating successful research collaborations.

Intern

How does it work?

The Match
  • Define your research needs with the APR.Intern team.
  • APR.Intern will source PhD students that match the required skillset.
  • Interviews will be set up for you to meet eligible students and select the right candidate.
The Proposal
  • APR.Intern will work with you to develop a detailed project plan and map out the objectives in collaboration with the student and their academic mentor.
  • APR.Intern will manage a standard agreement between all parties and coordinate internship finances.
The Internship
  • Once the agreement is signed, the project commences.
  • Regular check-ins will be made with all parties.
  • APR.Intern will organise a final presentation of the student’s project results and a written report.

Program investment

  • Three-month internship – $19,900
  • Four-month internship – $23,200
  • Five-month internship – $26,500

This fee is paid by the hosting business and includes both the APR.Intern facilitation fee and a scholarship for the student for the duration of the internship.  In some instances government subsidies may be available that reduce this fee.

There is no employment contract between the student and the business providing the internship. Students remain enrolled at their university whilst completing the internship and receive a scholarship, not an hourly rate. The project contract outlines that the industry partner is under no obligation to create an employment relationship with the student and that the primary purpose of the internship is for the intern’s educational purposes.
